CHS Meeting – October 11, 2017

Duffy’s Cut

Wednesday, October 11  from 7 to 9 pm.

Charlestown Elementary School Cafeteria

(please park on right side in the parking lot near the bus garage)

The October 11 CHS meeting is a presentation on “Duffy’s Cut”, a fascinating but tragic story of 57 Irish immigrant railroad workers who came to Malvern in 1832 to build a section  of the Pennsylvania Railroad near Immaculata University (known as Duffy’s Cut).  Within several months, all the workers were dead.

Official reports listed the cause of death as cholera.  But the use of ground penetrating radar indicated the bodies had been murdered.  Professor William Watson of Immaculata will show a DVD released by Irish-American films this summer and he will also update us on “digs” at the site.  Duffy’s Cut may have been the site of the largest mass murder in Pennsylvania history.  Duffy’s Cut was a topic of a 2013 PBS series entitled “Secrets of the Dead” and video is available online.
